The great natural harbor of Maputo was discovered in 1498 by Vasco da Gama and lies in the Southern part of Mozambique on the estuary of Rio Espirito Santo. Apart from Mozambique’s import and export cargo, the port is handling cargoes for landlocked countries Botswana, Swaziland and Zimbabwe. It is the closest deepsea harbor to Johannesburg, Mpumalanga and Limpopo and is handling a growing traffic from South Africa.
A successful privatization concession awarded in 2000 resulted in the Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) taking over the port management. The privatization program resulted in major developments on the deepening of the harbor approach, security and building of internal roads and rail connections. The port is connected to a road and railway system reaching Johannesburg, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, Zimbabwe and Swaziland.
